The right to food is a human right protecting the right for people to feed themselves in dignity, implying that sufficient food is available, that people have the means to access it, and that it adequately meets the individual’s dietary needs.

The South African Human Rights Commission highlights that South Africa has one of the highest rates of poverty and inequality in the world. Currently there are about 11 million people in South Africa who are food insecure and who do not know where their next meal is coming from.

There are 12 million poor food insecure people, 70% of which live in rural areas.

More than 60 percent of chronically hungry people are women.

The South African Child Gauge organisation have placed about a third of South Africa’s children ‘at serious risk of hunger’ with 5.5 million suffering from hunger-related issues and they estimate that there are 18.5 million children in Mzansi, meaning that around 30% of kids suffer from the effects of malnutrition.

At e’Pap we are committed to the right to healthy and adequate nutrition.
